Home Decor – The Eco-Friendly Way

So, I get to visit a lot of different homes – some are lived in, some staged.

Seeing how some people decorate their homes always amazes me. There are some really creative people out there. However, some of the most interesting homes have been the most eco-friendly I have seen. I’m not talking like they are using blankets made of water bottles, rather the decor is like eco-chic (is that a thing?!).

Some of the things I’ve seen got me thinking – what are some easy ways to decorate the eco-friendly way? Not only environmentally responsible but also stylish and cost-effective. Here is what I came up with:

  1. Look for furniture, decor, and textiles made from recycled or upcycled materials. This could include things like reclaimed wood, vintage fabrics, or repurposed metal. Use these pieces in all areas of your home.
  2. Opt for materials that are renewable and biodegradable, such as bamboo, cork, or organic cotton. Many homes I see have organic looking textiles.
  3. Incorporating plants into your decor not only adds a natural touch but also helps to purify the air in your home. This is like a two-for-one kind of decorating. Cute & health benefits, score!
  4. Use natural light to brighten up your home instead of relying on artificial lighting. This will not only save energy but also make your space feel more open and airy.
  5. When you do need to use artificial lighting, choose energy-efficient options like LED bulbs. They are more energy efficient and will actually save you money too.
  6. Choose paint, cleaning products, and other home decor items that are free from harmful chemicals like VOCs (volatile organic compounds). Avoid those toxic chemicals!
  7. Instead of buying new decor items, consider repurposing items you already have. For example, you could turn an old ladder into a bookshelf or use mason jars as vases. That farmhouse look is still in style – at least for a little while.
  8. By buying locally sourced decor, you can reduce the environmental impact of transportation and support local businesses at the same time. This one is close to my heart. #supportloal #shoplocal

Is there anything I missed? How would you decorate the eco-friendly way?
